LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – A four-run sixth in game one helped the Oglethorpe baseball team erase a 5-2 deficit in a come-from-behind win over Covenant to even the series, but the Stormy Petrels were unable to win the series after the Scots erased an extra-inning deficit in game two. Oglethorpe won game one 7-5 but lost game two 6-5 in eight innings.
Oglethorpe trailed 5-2 after the fourth inning of the first game before rallying to take the lead late.
Carson Weir got the scoring going with a two-RBI single to right in the sixth, then
Wyatt Lee and
Matthew Gill followed with an RBI groundout and RBI single, respectively, to tie the game and take the lead.
Lee's ground ball made it 5-5, then Gill singled to make it 6-5.
Jonathan Cruz gave the Petrels an insurance run in the seventh with a double, scoring
Sam Mills.
Gill went 3-for-4 in the first game and hit a game-tying solo home run in the seventh inning of game two to cap off his successful day at the plate.
Covenant led 4-0 in the nightcap until a
Will Arnold solo homer in the fourth sparked a string of five Stormy Petrel runs over the next four innings. Oglethorpe even looked to be well on its way to winning the finale and taking the series when Lee walked, stole a base and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth to give the Petrels a 5-4 lead. But Covenant scored two runs in the bottom half to escape with the win.
Up next, Oglethorpe faces Huntingdon at home on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m. in the first of two remaining games prior to the start of the Southern Athletic Association slate.
