ATLANTA—Matthew Gill tied the game with a two-out RBI in the seventh, Will Arnold broke the tie with an RBI triple in the eighth, and Noah Cole helped the Stormy Petrels avoid a scare in the ninth to come away with a 7-5 victory over Huntingdon Tuesday evening at Hermance Stadium. Oglethorpe trailed 5-1 after five innings before completing the thrilling come-from-behind win.
Gills' single in the seventh capped a two-hit day for the sophomore, who drove in Jonathan Cruz with a two-out base hit to center. It followed a Cruz two-RBI single through the right side that made it 5-4 and finished off a three-run inning.
The Stormy Petrels were hardly finished after that, as Carter Guarino reached with one out then hurried home to score on Arnold's go-ahead triple. Sam Mills then drove in Arnold with a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat to give Oglethorpe some cushion, and while that run proved to be unneeded, it certainly took off some of the stress of Huntingdon's final inning.
After the first two were out in the ninth, a single and walk saw the tying run reach base, then a wild pitch saw the tying run move into scoring position. Cole came in for the final out and helped Oglethorpe escape the jam with a fly ball to center.
Grant Guinther, who entered in the seventh with the Petrels behind 5-2, went 2.2 innings of scoreless effort on the way to the winning decision, his first decision of the season. He allowed only one hit and one walk alongside one strikeout. The save was Cole's third of the season as the Petrels won their third game.
Cruz joined Gill in the multihit column with a 2-for-5 effort, adding a run scored and three RBI's.
Up next, Oglethorpe has the upcoming weekend off to rest and prepare for the start of the Southern Athletic Association slate, which begins Saturday, March 5, with the start of a three-game set with Rhodes at home. In the meantime, the Stormy Petrels will have one more midweek game next week when they travel to Mississippi University for Women next Tuesday, March 1.
