Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. – One bad inning doomed Oglethorpe's baseball team Tuesday night at Piedmont. The Stormy Petrels gave up five runs in the second inning and lost 6-4.
The loss marked Oglethorpe's final nonconference game of the season and saw the Petrels drop the season series to Piedmont two games to one after splitting the other two meetings earlier this season. Piedmont's early scoring came on a solo homer in the first inning followed by a five-run, six-hit second inning which featured an RBI double and three RBI singles from the Lions.
Piedmont took a 6-0 lead into the third, although the Petrels would rally back with four runs across the three middle innings before loading the bases in the ninth. Mason Pearcy hit an RBI single in the fourth to score Carter Guarino. Then, Shota Barbeau and Pearcy followed with RBI singles in the sixth to make it 6-3. Barbeau would score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to two.
Oglethorpe had a great chance to then tie and take the lead in the ninth but fell short. Beginning with two out and nobody on, the Petrels started a rally with Rajan Sampat reaching on a single, then Will Arnold being hit by a pitch. Guarino then followed with a single to load the bases with the tying run in scoring position, but a flyout to right ended the threat.
Pearcy led the Petrels at the plate with a three-hit day, going 3-for-4 with two RBI's.
Game Notes
- This marked Pearcy's 11th multihit game and third three-hit game of his freshman season
- Arnold's hitting streak ended at 13 games but his streak of reaching base climbed to 14 games when he was hit by pitch in the ninth
- The Petrels moved to 9-7 when playing away from Hermance Stadium
- All three games of the season series this year were decided by two runs
- Jake Hill posted the strongest pitching effort out of the pen, striking out two in a perfect eighth to keep the Petrels within striking distance
