Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Record drops as Petrels win on senior day

ATLANTA—The individual single-season shutouts school record was reset Sunday on senior day as the Oglethorpe men's soccer team topped Millsaps 4-0 in a Southern Athletic Association affair. The Stormy Petrels also tied the school record for team single-season shutouts with their eighth blanking of the season.

Nicolas Mejia earned the individual record with the help of his back line which includes Daniel Amah, Luke Ferrari, Dylan Bapst, Carlos Cavallaro and Jake Locklear. Mejia needed to make only one save in the win thanks to that back line, and his season tally of individual shutouts came to eight, matching the Petrels as a team.

Oglethorpe got on the board early with a goal in the 17th minute from Adrian Levy. Aaron Ibe started the play with a great crossing pass in from the right side to find Cristian Medina in the penalty area. Medina made a quick flick backward to Levy who was there to finish from close range.

It proved to be all the scoring Oglethorpe would need, but sixteen minutes later Medina found the back of the net himself when he headed in a Ben Alram crossing pass from a similar spot.

Teams went into the break with the Petrels ahead 2-0 before Javier Martinez, one of 13 seniors recognized prior to the game, doubled that lead with a pair of goals in the second half. Martinez first stepped up to the penalty spot in the 54th minute to convert a great penalty in the lower left corner after a Millsaps handball in the box. Just six minutes later, Martinez scored again with a rocket from long range that rounded out the scoring. JR Cozine had the assist.

Match Notes

  • Mejia's record broke that of Scott Zoino which was set in 2018. The coinciding Petrel tally of eight team shutouts tied that of the 2015 squad that went 10-3-3 overall.
  • This was Oglethorpe's sixth shutout in the last seven games. The only goal conceded in that stretch came on a penalty kick.
  • The Petrels improved to 9-1-1 overall, 4-0 in the SAA, and 3-0 at home. They have outscored opponents 10-0 on their home turf.
  • The Petrels are now the only team in the SAA with only wins. They control their own destiny for the SAA postseason and can wrap up winning the league with a win over Rhodes or any two more wins.
  • Oglethorpe dominated the match from start to finish with a 25-2 advantage on the shot count and a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks.
  • Oglethorpe improved to 25-10 against Millsaps in the all-time series, dating back to 1991.
  • The seniors honored prior to the game included Spencer Hsu, Carlos Cavallaro, Jake Locklear, Parker McKnight, Luke Ferrari, Felipe Ferreira, Javier Martinez, Javier Aponte, Sebastian Molina, Maxwell Hughes, Alexis Puga, Jason Wood, and Cesar Chiguil.
