ATLANTA—An 11-0 run to start the game saw the Oglethorpe women's basketball team lead 17-1 after six and a half minutes, and the Stormy Petrels ran away with a 76-49 win over Covenant Wednesday evening in their 2023-24 opener.
Freshman Briley Elder debuted for the Petrels with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and no turnovers in 20 minutes of action. She was one of 11 Petrels in the scoring column in the win, with Jessamy Gaetanos and freshman Anna Conza also hitting double figures with 11 and 10, respectively.
Keimarya Rivera, the reigning Southern Athletic Association newcomer of the year, battled foul trouble but still finished with eight points, four rebounds and two blocked shots.
"Tonight was a fun game in a really good environment to start the year," said head coach Alex Richey. "I loved how we shared the ball and our effort on both ends of the court. There were several good things and definitely plenty to continue to work on."
Covenant answered Oglethorpe's 17-1 game-opening run with an 8-0 run of its own to trim into the deficit but would not get closer than eight the rest of the way. Oglethorpe, leading 23-13 near the start of the second quarter, used a 9-0 run highlighted by two Elder triples in a span of less than two minutes to surge into a 19-point lead. The Petrels then led by 20 at the break.
Oglethorpe led by as many as 24 in the third quarter and finished the game on a 7-2 run to take their largest lead of 28 in the final minute.
