LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.—Oglethorpe junior right-handed pitcher Michael Sarzen threw a nine-inning gem, but the Stormy Petrels were bit in extra innings at Covenant, 3-2, Tuesday night on the road. The game went 11 innings and saw Covenant win with the aid of the international tiebreaking rule which begins the inning with a runner on second base.
Sarzen scattered just three hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, across the career-long effort. He struck out two and walked one.
Sarzen's effort kept the Scots to a run in the third that came across via error and a run in the sixth that scored on a groundout. The latter tied the game after the Petrels struck first with two runs in the top of the third.
Matt Huckabee and Greg Johnson led off Oglethorpe's scoring inning with a pair of singles up the middle. Carson Weir then walked to load the bases with nobody out, then Drew Jabaley drove in one on a ground ball, and another scored on a Covenant error.
Covenant's extra-inning run came home to score on a lead-off single through the right side, driving in the runner from second placed on base to start the inning.
