ATLANTA—Four Huntingdon runs in the first inning and eight Oglethorpe runners left on base in the first three innings were the recipe for a 12-3 loss the Stormy Petrels suffered to the Hawks Wednesday evening in a nonconference game at Hermance Stadium.
The Petrels left 14 runners on base in the loss. Understandably, Oglethorpe had plenty of early chances. Jonathan Cruz doubled in a run in the first and Drew Jabaley later walked to load the bases with one out, but the Petrels left the bases loaded in the first with only one run to show for it.
In the second, Ethan Snipes and Jason Pearson hit back-to-back singles up the middle, but the pair would be left stranded.
Oglethorpe again loaded the bases in the third, this time with Snipes driving in a run to make it 4-2, but the last two would be retired to end the inning with three stranded once again.
The game stayed relatively close through six innings until Huntingdon opened things up with eight runs across the last three.
Game Notes
- Cruz and Jabaley both had two hits, Cruz 2-for-5 and Jabaley 2-for-3.
- Will Phillips, Zachary Cox and Charlie Boyce kept Huntingdon scoreless over five innings from the second through the sixth. Phillips pitched the second and third with two hits and three strikeouts. Cox pitched a hitless fourth. Boyce allowed only one hit in two innings of work.
- Cooper Wilson drove in a run in a pinch-hit at-bat in the ninth, scoring Jabaley on a double to right-center.
- Huntingdon won the season series after also winning at home back in February.
