ATLANTA- The men in black and gold have hit a two-game unbeaten streak to start the season after a gritty performance against Covenant resulted in a 0-0 draw on Saturday at Emory University in the Sonny Carter Invitational. This was the first time that Oglethorpe did not lose against Covenant since 2014 when they earned a 1-1 away draw against them. Daniel Amah was named the tournament MVP while Dylan Bapst, Ben Alram, Jake Locklear and Nicolas Mejia were named all-tournament.
Despite the team not getting the three points they wanted, there were still plenty of positives to take from this match.
The team has now two straight shutouts. They worked hard to get the clean sheet against Covenant. Nicolas Mejia impressed once again as the freshman had four big-time saves. Amah also stood out as the junior worked hard to recover the ball and prevent Covenant from getting the opportunity to score. Alram was an offensive threat with his pace and skillset, picking up right where he left off with the lone goal against Washington and Lee on Saturday. However, the junior was unlucky on Saturday as he could not find the back of the net this time around.
It has been a solid start to the season for Jon Akin's side with four points and two clean sheets in just two games. It is very early in the season and yet many players on the team are already standing out. The hunger for the Oglethorpe men's soccer program to prove themselves is clearly evident.
