JACKSON, Miss.—Back-to-back goals from Evan Thomas and Mackenzie Jones in the first 10 minutes of play helped the Oglethorpe women's soccer team get back on the winning track with a 4-0 victory over Millsaps Sunday afternoon in a Southern Athletic Association matchup.
Oglethorpe had nearly all the scoring opportunities the whole way through, and it paid off early when Thomas found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. It was her third goal of the season and came after a Jones shot saved by Millsaps goalkeeper Emily Lozano bounced back into the penalty area for Thomas to finish off.
Jones would find the back of the net herself just 45 seconds later to double the lead with her team-leading fifth goal of the season. This one followed a great pass in traffic from Harlow Cregar, finding Jones in the penalty area. Jones needed only one touch before slotting it low to the far post.
Caylen Loftin rounded out the first-half scoring with her fourth goal of the season in the 41st minute. Lauryn Oliver had the assist, her second of the season, on a through ball that gave Loftin a one-on-one with Lozano. Loftin slotted her fourth goal of the season low left and easily into the back of the net for Oglethorpe's 3-0 lead at the break.
Oglethorpe's domination continued through the second half and resulted in a goal to make it 4-0 in the 77th minute. Jones got her second of the day on one similar to the first goal from Thomas when a saved shot from Loftin went back into the field of play for Jones to finish off.
