Petrels fall to Huntingdon in final seconds

MONTEAGLE, Tenn. - After an uphill battle and multiple ties, Oglethorpe fell 69-65 to the Huntingdon Hawks in their second game of the season on Saturday.

Perry Robinson led with 18 points and six rebounds, followed by Dylan Pumpian with 12 points and eight rebounds, Jordan James with 10 points, and Jack Thomas with 10 rebounds.

The game was tied 65-65 with under a minute and a half to go, but Oglethorpe could not capitalize on a few opportunities. It was a tough Malachi Dooley layup that tied the game but an offensive rebound and second-chance basket on the next possession put the Hawks back into the lead.

Oglethorpe missed on its next opportunity but still kept within two in the final 20 seconds with a few chances under the basket but could not get one to drop. Then, after a defensive rebound from Huntingdon, the Hawks sank two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

"That's a game we let slip away," said head coach Philip Ponder. "Our defense was good enough to win today, but we just had too many turnovers, especially early, and then we left some points on the board from the free throw line. The fact that a couple of our key players didn't get their normal minutes, I thought we battled well against a really good team, and still had a chance to win in the last few seconds. We will look to get better from this one."

Huntingdon amassed a 6-0 lead at the beginning of the game, with James being the one to break their streak. The Petrels continually fought for dominance, but the Hawks were relentless. A break finally came late in the first half, as Joe Helenbrook, James, Pumpian, and Robert Reisman, in that order, combined for a 9-3 run to tie the game at 27-27. The score would tie three more times before last second free-throws by the Hawks had the Petrels down 33-31.

After halftime, Pumpian jumped into action to even out the score once again. Huntingdon responded, and the score tied at the 37- and 39-point marks as well. However, the Hawks managed to pull ahead for a lead that would ultimately hand them the game.
