Petrels fall in first game of Peach Cup

ROME, Ga. – The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels suffered a 16-5 loss to the Piedmont Lions in their first game of the Peach State Classic hosted by Berry.

Robbie Coull led with two goals, while Max Brand, Quade Bedgood and Jazz Washington each scored a goal of their own. Bedgood also recovered four groundballs, and Hinton Chandler caused two turnovers. Goalie Xay Duax made 21 saves.

Piedmont mounted an aggressive strategy in the first period and managed to get a significant leg up on the Petrels. Coull scored his first goal with four minutes left in the first period, then another with 30 seconds remaining. Washington followed with a goal at nine seconds on the clock and brought the score to 5-3. Although Oglethorpe was not on top, things seemed to be looking up, considering the Petrels had three uninterrupted goals.

However, Piedmont prevented the Petrels from scoring in the second quarter and raised their lead to 12-3. Brand and Bedgood found their goals in the third quarter, both assisted by Israel Pendleton-Moore. Bedgood's would be Oglethorpe's final goal of the game, as Piedmont scored twice in the final quarter and subjected the Petrels to a 16-5 loss.

Game Notes

  • Oglethorpe went 21-for-23 on clear attempts compared to Piedmont's 14-for-15.
  • As a team, the Petrels scooped 13 groundballs.
  • Chris McDowell recorded his first caused turnover of the season.
  • This was the first ever Peach Cup, and host Berry defeated LaGrange 21-7 before the Oglethorpe/Piedmont game.
