MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After an excellent display of teamwork, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels defeated the Huntingdon Hawks 10-8 to claim their first victory of the 2024 season Wednesday night on the road.Â
Jazz Washington and Israel Pendleton-Moore led with four goals each. Max Brand and Travis McDonald also recorded goals of their own, while Robbie Coull and Quade Bedgood both had an assist. Goalkeeper Xay Duax made 17 saves.
Huntingdon managed to take the first two shots of the game, but one was wide and the other saved by Duax. Washington scored the first goal early in the first quarter, and his second quickly followed. The Hawks were able to score later in the period, but Pendleton-Moore was rather quick to respond with his first goal.
Oglethorpe really turned up the heat in the second quarter, as Washington and Pendleton-Moore scored again. The Petrels only allowed one goal in the period and headed into halftime up 5-3.
Robbie Coull ended the second quarter with a buzzer-beater shot that was saved by Huntingdon's goalie, but he kept up the energy in the third period and assisted an early goal from Pendleton-Moore. The Hawks were once again only allowed one goal in the period. Brand earned his goal later in the period.
Oglethorpe entered the fourth quarter up 7-4, a cushion that would come in handy. The Hawks managed to score four goals against Oglethorpe's three. A late goal by McDonald pushed the Petrels into double digits, but the Hawks were still able to squeak in one final goal. Despite Huntingdon's late burst of energy, Oglethorpe defeated Huntingdon 10-8.Â

The Stormy Petrels will face Piedmont on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. as part of the Peach State Classic hosted by Berry. The tournament will continue on Sunday, with Oglethorpe's opponent to be determined.
