ATLANTA - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels split their Sunday home matches this morning, falling 3-0 to No. 10 Trinity, then defeating Piedmont 3-0.
Match one vs. No. 10 Trinity
Gracie Sims led with seven kills, Abby Wheeler made 11Â digs, and Autumn Lilly had 19 assists.
The Tigers dominated the first set, making a quick 25-9 win. Oglethorpe was able to hold more ground in the second set but not quite catch up and fell 25-19.
Ashlynn Stephens made an ace to kick off the third set, but the Tigers responded seamlessly. The Petrels were able to take the lead or tie things up multiple times during this set: 6-4 from an ace by Alise Mayers, 9-8 with an ace from Lilly. The final time the Petrels were on even ground was at 16-16, before the Tigers found a seven-point run. Stephens and Camdyn George managed to delay Trinity's takeover for a bit, but the Tigers ultimately won 25-18 for a game sweep.
Match two vs. Piedmont
Aubrey Hill led with nine kills, Laney Higgins made nine digs, and Madison Thompson had season highs of three aces and six kills, plus her first digs. Several Petrels recorded personal highs and career milestones in this match.
Symantha Lewis recorded her first dig and kill of the season and Toki Ingram made her first assist and digs. Morgan Phillips made a season high of two blocks, Ariana Roeder made a season high four digs, Lauren Coursey hit a high of six kills, and Laney Higgins made season highs of three assists and nine digs. Three freshmen played in their first home match.
Oglethorpe opened with six unanswered points, highlighted by a kill from Sims. Reversing the events of the Trinity game, Oglethorpe dominated in their first set against the Lions for a 25-12 win.
Piedmont sharpened their aim in the second set, giving the Petrels quite a scare. Oglethorpe began the set with a two-point advantage thanks to Roeder's serving. The rest of the set looked as if things could go either way. The Petrels were the first to reach set point with a kill from Lauren Coursey, then Piedmont scored thrice in a row. The Lions gave up one point with a service error, then made another kill. Alise Mayers saved the set with two kills, plus another Piedmont error, for a 28-26 win.
The Petrels went on to dominate the third set as well, going on multiple runs. Piedmont made a great effort, but Hill sealed the deal with the last of several kills for the win.
