Petrels suffer hard-fought 2-1 loss against No. 6 Trinity

ATLANTA- Despite a late equalizing goal from Lucas Brown, the Oglethorpe men's soccer fell 2-1 to No. 6 Trinity Friday to open Southern Athletic Association play. The Stormy Petrels looked to earn a draw against the SAA preseason favorite after Brown's goal but gave up the winner on a free kick in the 87th minute.

With competitive fight, the first half was equally dominant. The Petrels got the offense started early with a shots by Luca Orsi and Daniel Gardner. Sebastian Lewis' defensive presence was strong with a save shortly after, keeping the Tigers at bay.

The Petrels and the Tigers were head-to-head in a physical game, tallying 10 fouls in the half. The back-and-forth possessions allowed the Tigers to take two shots, both saved by Lewis who finished the half with six saves. Even though the pressure from Oglethorpe continued with shots from Lashawn Brown and Christian Watson, the score remained at a stalemate.

The Tigers started the second half with a penalty kick, saved by Lewis, then kicked back in for a goal, making the score 1-0 in the 49th minute. The Petrels took a while to respond, giving the Tigers space to outshoot them with three shots, one on goal saved by Lewis.

After an unsuccessful corner kick, headed out by the Tigers, the Petrels were awarded another. In the 81st minute, Gustavo Canas put a great ball in play from the corner that found Ethan Martinez for a shot, then Gardener but deflected. Despite the chaos, Brown swooped in from being on the ground to finish the play through the Tigers' defense for an equalizing goal in the 81st minute.

Looking to advance the score, the Tigers took a shot but it was saved by Lewis. After a hard fight in the defense, Trinity scored a heartbreaking last-minute goal to increase the score 2-1 on a free kick from the left side. The Petrels continued to fight in order to keep the game alive, yet ran out of time to do so.

Brown's goal was his first of the season.
