CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels picked up their first win of the season with a 96-91 victory at Johnson & Wales Friday evening.
Willard Thompson and Andrew LaVigne led with 18 points each, with LaVigne adding five assists and four rebounds as well. Malachi Dooley made 16 points and Carter Watkins had 14. Jackson Kemp made eight points and 10 rebounds.
"That was a good win," said head coach Philip Ponder after the game. "I thought we moved the ball well and shared the ball well. It's great to have six guys in double figures. I think this year, we're going to have different guys step up on different nights. We still need to improve our defense, but our offense has been good, and road wins are always big."
The Johnson and Wales Wildcats opened with a layup, to which Dooley responded with one of his own. Much of the first half was back-and-forth, but Oglethorpe eventually found an eight-point run and was up 22-15. The Wildcats quickly closed that gap, and briefly took their own lead. The first half ended with a nine-point run from LaVigne, Watkins and Turner to boost the Petrels 49-42.
Oglethorpe held the lead for a majority of the second half, until the Wildcats tied things up at 70-70. LaVigne quickly broke the tie with another layup, and the Petrels went on a 10-2 run. Oglethorpe held the lead for the rest of the game, which ended with two good free throws by Turner. After a tight match, the Petrels picked up their first win with a 96-91 final score.
