RALEIGH, N.C. ā After winning a high-scoring road game against Johnson & Wales Friday night, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels dropped their second North Carolina game this weekend, fallingĀ 71-67 to the William Peace Pacers on Sunday.Ā
Malachi Dooley led with a stellar 26 points, two off his career high, while adding eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Andrew LaVigne followed with 13 points while Jackson Kemp made six rebounds.
"The second game on the road can always be tough, and we just didn't have our same energy today," said head coach Philip Ponder after the game. "We could never really get into an offensive flow, and we missed some shots we normally make. We had made over 68 percent of our 2-point field goal attempts coming into the game but we were in the low 40's today."
The Pacers started things off with a 3-pointer and a tip-in to their advantage, then Mason Kemp shot a three of his own. The game was tied several times during the first half, but scoring was limited in the final minutes and William Peace made a 40-33 lead at the intermission.
Dooley, LaVigne and J. Kemp combined for a seven-point run early in the second half, but it still could not surpass the Pacers. William Peace found several more runs of their own, building a bigger and bigger barrier between the two teams. Oglethorpe made a six-point run in the final minute featuring a 3-pointer from Logan Turner, but the Pacers still made the final basket for a 71-67 finish.
"Neither team shot particularly well for the game, but our shooting percentages were slightly better than theirs," Ponder added. "(William Peace) had 17 offensive rebounds to our five and because of that, they attempted 12 more shots than we did. That was the difference in the game."
Game Notes
- Carter Watkins made five rebounds.
- M. Kemp made three steals.
- The lead changed 12 times in the first half.
