LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels split their games at Covenant this weekend, falling to LeTourneau but getting a major win against Covenant. Oglethorpe fell 69-84 to the Yellow Jackets and beat the Scots 108-91.
The Covenant game featured five Petrels in double digits, with Dooley hitting a career high 31 points alongside 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Jackson Kemp hit 18 points and 13 rebounds, LaVigne made 17 points, Willard Thompson hit 16 points, and Watkins had 13 points and seven rebounds.Â
"Covenant plays a unique style and you never feel completely comfortable, but I thought we attacked their pressure and trapping extremely well," said head coach Philip Ponder after the win. "It was good to get a bounce-back win today, and road wins are always valuable. Now we're looking forward to our home opener a long stretch of home games."
Watkins and J. Kemp opened with seven unanswered points, foreshadowing the Saturday results. The Petrels quickly climbed to a 20-9 lead, then ran to a 20-point difference by the end of the first half.
Oglethorpe continued to dominate in the second half, as Dooley took off. Thompson went five for five on free throws and Thompson went three for four. Oglethorpe hit the 100-point mark after a 3-pointer by J. Kemp. The Scots managed a run at the end of the game, but M. Kemp was the last to score and the Petrels won 108-91.
The LeTourneau game featured a double-double by Malachi Dooley with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew LaVigne followed with 10 points and Mason Kemp with six rebounds. The game opened with a layup from Carter Watkins and a 3-pointer from LaVigne. The Petrels briefly held the lead, until the Yellow Jackets tied things at 8-8. The first half was low-scoring and ended 37-21 LeTourneau.
M. Kemp and Dooley hit two free throws each at the top of the second half, but the Yellow Jackets continued to strengthen their lead. The Petrels were unable to take a lead again, and despite Kam Stone's buzzer-beater, Oglethorpe fell 84-69.
