Game Recap: Baseball |

Petrels rally twice, extend winning streak to seven games

ATLANTA—Twice the Oglethorpe baseball team erased a 3-0 lead and twice the Stormy Petrels came away victorious Saturday at Hermance Stadium in a doubleheader against Husson. Oglethorpe won game one 4-3 and game two 6-3 to sweep the series and extend its winning streak to seven games.

This marked the program's longest winning streak since 2017, when the Petrels won seven straight games from March 25 to April 2.

Husson used the long ball to get early leads in both games but despite the early edge Oglethorpe's defense settled in to limit damage the rest of the way. Freshman JB Sain went five innings in the opener of the doubleheader, picking up the win to move to 2-0. Jace Armstrong went 6.2 innings in the nightcap, one out short of a complete game, and picked up the win to move to 2-1.

Oglethorpe played small ball in game one, scoring first on a bases-loaded walk to Trey Kinnan in the second, then scoring one on an error in the third. It was 3-2 Husson when a ground ball from Cooper Krause scored Kinnan in the fourth, then Isaiah Pou rounded out the scoring for both teams with a go-ahead dinger to left in the fifth.

Husson jumped out of the gate quicky in game two with a three-run homer in the first, but Armstrong would settle down to keep the visiting Eagles scoreless the rest of his six and two-third innings. Brick Conway had an RBI single in the fourth, to tie the game 3-3, followed by Jaxson Corr who drove in Conway with a single of his own to make it 5-3 a few moments later.

Things got dicey in the final inning as Husson had the bases loaded in a 6-3 game, but Hayden Partian picked up the save, his first, needing just six pitches to get the final out of the game, a 3-2 strikeout.

Game One Notes

  • Kinnan went 4-for-4 with a walk. He also scored a run and drove in a run.
  • Drew Jabaley had a 2-for-3 effort with a double, a walk and a run.
  • Pou's homer was his second of the season.
  • Sain's winning line was five innings, seven hits, three runs, no walks and six strikeouts.
  • Konner Burrell pitched the sixth and seventh and allowed two hits, no runs and one walk next to one strikeout.
  • Dylan Quintilio earned his fourth save of the season after going two perfect innings: the eighth and the ninth. He faced six batters and struck out the first four.

Game Two Notes

  • Jonathan Cruz had the 4-for-4 game in the nightcap, going perfect at the plate with a run scored.
  • Pou also had a perfect and multihit game, going 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
  • Armstrong's final line featured 6.2 innings, nine hits, three runs, one walk and six strikeouts.
  • Partian struck out the only batter he faced to get the final out, fanning Husson cleanup hitter Matt Holmes. Holmes accounted for all the Eagles' runs with his three-run homer in the top of the first.

Series Notes

  • Cruz batted .667 for the series, going 8-for-12 with two runs and a double.
  • Kinnan batted .462 after going 6-for-13. He scored twice and drove in three while also stealing four bases on four attempts.
  • Quintilio combined for two appearances and went four perfect innings. He struck out six.
  • Burrell also pitched four innings across two appearances for the series. He gave up one (earned) run for an ERA of 2.25.
