ATLANTA—Oglethorpe junior Jackson Hiller has been named Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week after a record-breaking medalist performance this week at the NCAA national championship preview. Hiller won the event by five strokes to secure his second tournament win of the season and third of his career.
Hiller broke the Oglethorpe 54-hole record with a blistering 66-68-68, a 13 under par effort that topped the previous Oglethorpe record by one stroke. He held the weight of the individual lead after each of the first two rounds, ultimately leading the field in par 3 and par 5 scoring at 2 under and 8 under, respectively.
Hiller's opening-round 66 was just three strokes shy of Oglethorpe's 18-hole scoring record, and he fired a 32 on the front nine highlighted by four straight birdies from holes 4 through 7. Two days later, Hiller turned in another strong start highlighted by a 31 on the front nine. This one featured five birdies, three of which came back-to-back-to-back across the first three holes.
All this led the No. 3 Stormy Petrels to third at the national championship preview. The event featured 20 programs from the latest top-25 poll, including each of the top 16.
Up next, Oglethorpe hosts the West Pines Collegiate Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 6-7, in Douglasville, Georgia. The event is set for 54 holes, and the Petrels will look to win the event for the third year in a row.
