ATLANTA, Ga. – The Oglethorpe University baseball team closed out its weekend series in strong fashion Sunday afternoon, defeating Berry College 9-6 to secure a 2-1 series victory. Behind a patient offensive approach, timely extra-base hits, and a steady outing from the pitching staff, the Stormy Petrels built an early lead and held off a late push to finish the job.
Oglethorpe set the tone early with a decisive second inning, sending nine hitters to the plate and scoring four runs on just two hits while drawing three walks. Ethan Snipes opened the scoring with an RBI single, followed by another run-scoring hit from Nick Morgan. Cade Eidam added an RBI walk, and Trey Kinnan brought home another run on a fielder's choice to cap the inning and give the Petrels a 4-0 advantage.
The Petrels continued to apply pressure in the third when Jace Armstrong lifted a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to five. After Berry answered with two runs in the fourth, Oglethorpe delivered the biggest swing of the game in the bottom half of the inning.
With two runners on, Evan Smallwood ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line to push the lead back to five. Moments later, Brick Conway followed with an RBI single to center, stretching the advantage to 8-2 and regaining full momentum.
Oglethorpe added an insurance run in the fifth as Smallwood came through again with an RBI single, finishing a productive day at the plate. Smallwood led the Petrels with three RBIs on two hits, providing the key extra-base hit that broke the game open.
Snipes also turned in a strong performance, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Morgan added two hits and a run driven in. Conway contributed a two-hit game with an RBI and a stolen base, as Oglethorpe totaled nine runs on nine hits and worked 11 walks.
On the mound, Dylan Quintilio earned the win with 5.0 innings of relief, allowing four runs (three earned) while working through traffic and inducing key outs. Paul Gaeta gave the Petrels a solid start, allowing two runs over 3.1 innings.
Late in the game, Berry mounted a ninth-inning rally, bringing the tying run to the plate after scoring three runs. Oglethorpe turned to Tate Henderson, who recorded the final two outs to secure his first save of the season and seal the series victory.
The Petrels' ability to build an early lead proved to be the difference, as Oglethorpe combined disciplined at-bats with timely hitting to control the game throughout.
