ATLANTA–The Oglethorpe University baseball team celebrated senior day with an offensive surge and resilient play, earning a split on the day and clinching a 2-1 series victory over Sewanee. The Stormy Petrels dropped a tight 8-7 battle in game one before responding in dominant fashion with a 16-3 run-rule victory in game two, showcasing both depth at the plate and key pitching performances.
With the series win, Oglethorpe capitalized on timely hitting and explosive innings throughout the weekend, highlighted by a 14-hit effort in the opener and a 16-run outburst in the finale.
Game One: Oglethorpe 7, Sewanee 8
Oglethorpe battled back from a multirun deficit but came up just short in an 8-7 loss to open the day.
After falling behind following a five-run fourth inning by Sewanee, the Petrels steadily chipped away at the deficit. A pivotal sixth inning saw Oglethorpe score four runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Trey Kinnan and aggressive baserunning that brought the Petrels within two.
Kinnan finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Evan Smallwood led the offense with three hits, consistently setting the table. Brick Conway delivered one of the biggest swings of the game, launching a solo home run in the ninth inning to bring Oglethorpe within one and give the Petrels a chance late.
Oglethorpe totaled 14 hits in the contest, with multiple contributions across the lineup, including multihit performances from Conway, Ben Chatham and Aiden Hosford. On the mound, Paul Gaeta and Hunter Lovett provided stability out of the bullpen. Lovett closed the game with two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two to keep Oglethorpe within striking distance.
Despite the late push, the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Game Two: Oglethorpe 16, Sewanee 3
The Petrels responded emphatically in game two, erupting for 16 runs in a dominant offensive performance to secure the series victory.
After conceding two early runs in the first inning, Oglethorpe answered immediately and took control with an eight-run second inning, followed by a six-run third inning that broke the game open.
Ryan Causey delivered a key moment in the second inning with a two-RBI double, finishing the game with three RBIs. Cade Eidam led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Nick Morgan added three hits and two RBIs of his own.
Jace Armstrong reached base consistently and scored four runs, while Ben Chatham contributed two hits and two RBIs. The Petrels showed patience at the plate, drawing eight walks and capitalizing on nearly every scoring opportunity.
On the mound, Will Lumpkin earned the win with a strong relief appearance, tossing three scoreless innings while striking out five. Grant Guinther followed with three shutout innings, allowing just one hit to maintain control of the game.
The pitching staff combined to hold Sewanee to just four hits after the first inning, shutting down any chance of a comeback.
