The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team began the 2009
season in style by topping Brewton Parker on Salamone Field, 2-1.
The game was even for much of the first half until, with only
six minutes remaining before the break, junior Bryan Burnick
fed freshman Ben Robertson for the game's first goal. Burnick used
his head to feed the ball across the goalkeepers face and
the rookie from Boone, North Carolina showed he knew what
to do with it.
Up 1-0 heading into the second stanza, the Petrels peppered the
Barons' net for most of the second half but could not break
through. Finally, with only five minutes remaining in the contest,
Oglethorpe sealed the deal when freshman Casey Sheppard put a cross
right on the foot of sophomore Jimmy Harter to give the Petrels a
2-0 lead. On both of the Petrels goals this afternoon, the Baron's
keeper did not stand a chance.
Brewton Parker found the back of the net with 2 minutes remaining
in the contest but it was for naught as Oglethorpe claimed the
season opener.
Next up for the Petrels is a weekend tournament called the Sonny
Carter Invitational. Oglethorpe faces Southern Wesleyan at Emory
University at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday before squaring off with the
University of the Ozarks at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday on Salamone Field.
