The Oglethorpe University men's tennis team lost to Sewanee in
Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, 7-2. The Tigers swept the doubles
competition to put the Petrels in a hole and then eked out several
tough singles matches for the victory.
Sewanee easily won at the numbers one and two doubles positions
(8-2, 8-1 respectively) but the number three slot was hotly
contested with Bryan Bailey and Lawrence Sweatman narrowly falling
to the Tigers' combo of Henry and Holloway, 8-6. Had Sweatman and
Bailey been able to prevail, the Petrels would have take some much
needed momentum into the singles matches.
Felix Mann began the singles competition by winning over
regionally ranked Daniel Arnold, 7-5, 7-6 in a thrilling match at
number one. The Petrels, however, would lose three set heartbreaks
at the numbers two and three positions with Alex Biffle going down,
6-1, 1-6, 6-3 and Ross Beall losing, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Bailey claimed victory from the number four position by topping
Jay Hill, 6-4, 7-6 before the Tigers closed out the match with wins
at the five and six spots over Brad White (7-5, 6-4) and Masen
Shreve (6-1, 6-1).
The Petrels are now 1-2 on the season and will get set for a
busy weekend that includes a Thursday match with Cedarville at home
(3:30 p.m.), a Friday match at Huntingdon (2:30 p.m.) and a
Saturday match at home against Young Harris (2:00 p.m.).
