The Oglethorpe University men's tennis team lost to Young Harris
College on Downing Howell Courts on Saturday afternoon, 5-4. The
Petrels were trying to win their third match in as many days but
were denied in a tight contest.
The match most likely hinged on a Petrel loss at the number two
doubles slot when Felix Mann and Bryan Bailey lost a 9-7
heartbreaker. Brad White and Ross Beall won at the number one spot,
8-5, but Alex Biffle and Lawrence Sweatman were bested at number
three, 8-3.
The 2-1 advantage earned in the doubles was just enough for
Young Harris to hang on for the win as the two teams split the
singles competition at three apiece.
Winners for the Petrels in singles were Mann (6-0, 6-1),
Biffle (6-3, 6-0) and Bailey (6-3, 5-7, 6-1). Beall (6-2, 6-2),
White (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) and Sweatman (7-6, 6-0) each suffered defeat.
Oglethorpe is now 3-3 on the season and will face Berry College
at home on March 10 at 3:00 p.m.
