The Oglethorpe University women's tennis team lost four weekend
matches in Birmingham, Alabama against difficult SCAC
competition.
The Petrels lost to host Birmingham-Southern
(7-1) on Friday, were topped by Millsaps (6-3) and
Southwestern (8-1) on Saturday and finished the weekend with a
Sunday loss to Centre (9-0).
The host Panthers bested Oglethorpe 7-1 on Friday, sweeping the
doubles matches to remove any doubt. The combos of Alsion
Burt-Sarah Beth Britt (8-3), Molly Colvard-Jayme Danielson
(8-5) and LaDonna Barnes-Kim O'Dell (8-2) each suffered
doubles setbacks. In singles, O'Dell (6-2, 6-3) won at No. 6 but
the Petrels suffered defeats at the other slots with Britt (1-6,
6-1, 6-4), Colvard (6-1, 6-3), Burt (6-2, 6-2) and Duff (6-0,
6-0) each going down. Danielson's singles match was not played
to completion as the Panthers had sewn up the win.
On Saturday, the Petrels battled Millsaps in the morning before
falling, 6-3. Oglethorpe was swept in the doubles competition but
fought back in singles to make it close. The doubles combos of
Danielson-Burt (8-3), Britt-Colvard (8-5) and Barnes-O'Dell
(8-5) each went down in their matches. In singles, Colvard (6-0,
6-0), O'Dell (6-3, 6-1) and Duff (6-4, 3-6, 10-4) drew victories
while Danielson (7-5, 6-1), Britt (6-1, 6-2) and Burt (6-2,
6-0) suffered defeat.
On Saturday afternoon the Petrels were bested by Southwestern,
8-1. The Pirates took all three doubles points as Burt-Britt (8-2),
Danielson-Colvard (8-5) and Kayla Atkins-Barnes (8-3) all went
down in defeat. Britt secured the Petrels lone point in singles
when her opponent at No. 2 retired trailing in the third set.
Danielson (6-4, 6-7, 10-5), Burt (6-4, 6-4), Colvard (6-1, 6-2),
O'Dell (7-5, 6-2) and Duff (6-1, 6-2) were each bested in
their singles matches.
The Petrels completed their gauntlet against highly-regarded
SCAC competition with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Centre on
Sunday. The doubles combos of Britt-Colvard (8-1), Burt-O'Dell
(8-6) and Atkins-Barnes (8-1) were each bested in their matches. In
singles, Britt (6-1, 6-1), Burt (6-1, 6-1), Duff (6-0, 6-3), O'Dell
(6-4, 6-0), Barnes (6-0, 6-1) and Atkins (6-0, 6-0)went down
in order.
With the results, the Lady Netters are now 5-12 on the season
and will get set to face Covenant on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. on
Downing Howell Courts.
