The Oglethorpe baseball team lost to Emory University on
Anderson Field on Wednesday night, 8-6. Despite the loss, the
Petrels took the season series over the Eagles two games to
one.
The two teams traded blows in the early innings and the score
was knotted at six apiece heading to the top of the fifth. The
Petrels plated 2 in the first, 1 in the second and 3 in the fourth
to catch the Eagles who scored 1 run in each the first, second and
fourth innings, wrapped around a 3-spot in the the third.
The game suddenly turned into a pitcher's duel in the fifth,
though, as Oglethorpe failed to score the remainder of the way and
Emory took advantage of a 7th inning defensive mistake to post the
decisive two runs. The Petrels appeared to have gotten out of the
7th inning unscathed when Brad Brickhouse struck out Andrew DeYoung
on a curve ball breaking into the dirt. Catcher Joe Parillo could
not handle the pitch, however, and an Emory runner scored from
third when Parillo failed to connect with Andy Farrey at first base
for the final out of the frame. The Eagles added an insurance run
after a stolen base and a flare into left field landed for a bloop
hit, scoring DeYoung.
The Petrles are now 19-17 on the season and will get set to host
their final series of the season this weekend against
Birmingham-Southern on Anderson Field. First pitch of a Saturday
doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and Sunday's Senior Day
ceremonies precede a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
