The Oglethorpe Lady Netters picked up their first SCAC victory
of the season on Friday morning by topping Austin College in
Memphis, Tennessee, 5-4. Later in the day, the Petrels were blanked
9-0 by a stout Rhodes College squad on their home courts.
Critical to claiming their first conference win of the season
were the two out of three doubles points which the women were able
to record. The Petrels got wins from the numbers two and three
positions with the duos of Molly Colvard-Jayme
Danielson (8-5) and Kayla Atkins-LaDonna
Barnes (8-6) each scoring big wins. The number one combo
of Alison
Burt-Mary Beth Britt (8-2) went down in defeat to their
Kangaroo opponents.
In singles, Danielson (6-2, 7-5) completed a perfect day by
clinching the match with a win at No. 1. At. No. 4 Burt (6-0, 6-1)
was an easy winner as was Kimberly O'Dell (6-1, 6-0) at No. 6.
Dropping their singles matches were Britt (4-6, 6-3, 10-2), Colvard
(6-1, 6-4) and Duff (6-0, 7-6).
The tough Lynx squad proved to be too much for the Petrels later
in the afternoon in earning the sweep. Rhodes handled the doubles
matches easily, only allowing Oglethorpe to win a total of 5 games
among the three matches. In singles, only Alison Burt was able to
win a set at No. 4 and Kim O'Dell lost a nail-biter, 9-8 (7).
With the victory and loss, Oglethorpe moves their record to 6-14
on the season and will get set to face two more SCAC foes on
Saturday in Memphis.
