The Oglethorpe baseball team was trounced in a doubleheader
sweep Saturday, losing to Birmingham Southern 16-5 and 15-2. The
second game was shortened to seven innings because of the 10-run
rule.
In Game 1, the Petrels were in the game until the seventh and
final inning. The visiting Panthers took a 6-0 lead over the first
two innings. However, the Petrels came back with four runs in the
third to cut the lead to 6-4. Run-scoring singles by Andy Farrey,
Stephen Archer and Nick Manai put the Petrels back in the game.
However, in the seventh inning, the Panthers scored 10 runs on
11 hits, more than putting the Petrels out of the game.
The Petrels got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but it
was too late at that point.
Matthew Cornwell picked up the loss in Game 1. He struggled in
the first two innings and in the seventh, but in between, he put
together four innings of quality work.
In Game 2, it was more of the same from the Panthers. A Stephen
Archer solo home run in the second was one of the lone bright spots
for the Petrels. It tied the score at 1-1.
But Birmingham Southern would score five runs over the next two
innings to put the game out of reach. Then they scored six in the
seventh to activate the 10-run rule.
Mark Hoban suffered the loss in Game 2.
The losses drop the Petrels back to .500 on the year, at 19-19.
They also drop the team to .500 in SCAC play, at 7-7. As such,
Oglethorpe has dropped from position for the top seed in the East
for the upcoming SCAC Tournament, and now is in position for the
third seed out of the division. They can still get the second seed,
but must beat Birmingham Southern tomorrow and hope that Centre
beats DePauw.
Tomorrow afternoon is Senior Day at Anderson Field, as it is the
Petrels' final home game of the season. First pitch against
Birmingham Southern is scheduled for 1 p.m. Be sure to get to the
ballpark early to take in the Senior Day festivities.
