The men's tennis team won the 4 vs. 5 match at the 2010 SCAC
Championships over Sewanee in Little Rock, Arkansas, 5-4. The
victory over the Tigers marks Oglethorpe's first in the modern era
(since 1991) and propels the Petrels into the semifinals against
No. 1 seed Trinity.
The Tigers took two of three doubles matches but Oglethorpe
rallied to claim four of the six singles matches for the historic
victory. The doubles combo of Felix Mann-Bryan Bailey (8-6) secured
the Petrel point in doubles while Ross Beall-Alex Biffle (8-4) and
Lawrence Sweatman-Brad White (8-5) went down in nhard fought
battles.
In singles, the Petrels got wins from the top four spots with
Mann (6-3, 4-6, 6-3), Beall (6-3, 6-3), Biffle (6-1, 6-0) and
Bailey (6-3, 6-1) combining to push Oglethorpe over the top.
White (6-1, 6-0) and Timothy Tanko (6-4, 6-0) were bested in
their singles matches.
The Petrels advance to the semifinals for the fist time in the
modern era and it is also the first time in 17 years that the final
four teams are not Trinity, Rhodes, DePauw and Sewanee.
Oglethorpe's match with nationally ranked Trinity gets
underway at 12:00 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
