The Oglethorpe baseball team swept Sewanee in a doubleheader
Saturday afternoon. They won the first game, 13-4, then won the
second game, 11-8.
In Game 1, the Petrels scored four runs each in the third,
fourth and fifth innings to put the game out of reach for the
visiting Tigers.
The story of the first game was Andy Farrey, who hit two home
runs and added a sacrifice fly, driving in five for the game.
J.J. Rizzo also had a three RBI game, including a home run, and
Nick Manai added two RBI doubles.
Matthew Cornwell started the series about as well as one could
hope, just like with the previous weekend's series against
DePauw. He tallied another complete game, allowing four runs on
seven hits, striking out eight and walking two.
He also had a good game at the plate, going 2-for-3
with a leadoff home run, and scoring three runs.
About the only negative for the Petrels in Game 1 came when
second baseman Jake Spear fouled a ball off of his leg. He stayed
in the game for another inning, but eventually had to come out.
In Game 2, the Petrels scored nine of their 11 runs in the
third and fourth innings, running out to a big lead and then
hanging on to it at the end.
After a five-run third, the Petrels struck the big blow that
looked as though it might put the game out of reach for Sewanee.
Stephen Archer blasted a three-run homer into deep right-center to
put the Petrels up 9-2.
However, Sewanee started chipping away and had the Oglethorpe
lead cut to 9-7 when Joseph Parillo came through with a huge
two-out, two-run double in the sixth to push the lead back up
to 11-7.
Oglethorpe was able to hold on from there, although Sewanee
ended the game with the potential tying run on first base.
Drew Brooks came on to put out the fire and record the
final out. In so doing, he picked up his first career save.
Spencer Kennedy pitched three quality innings for the
Petrels to get them to that point, but started running out of
gas in the ninth, requiring Brooks to come on and finish it.
Kennedy did not allow a hit and struck out six, but did issue five
walks and hit a batter, eventually allowing a run in the ninth.
Neil Amos picked up the win, going five innings, allowing four
runs on 10 hits.
Adam Brazenas was 5-for-5 in Game 2, with a double, an RBI
and three runs scored.
For the afternoon, Farrey was 4-for-7 with seven RBIs and
Brazenas was 5-for-7 with two RBs and five runs scored.
The wins move the Petrels back above .500 for the year, at
15-13. It also moves them to 4-4 in SCAC play.
The final game of the series will be played on Sunday afternoon.
First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m.
