The Oglethorpe baseball team assured themselves of winning this
year's season series with Emory, defeating the Eagles 6-5 on
Wednesday afternoon in a makeup game of a February contest
postponed by snow.
The Petrels jumped on the board early against their archrivals,
scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. They used six
straight singles to leadoff the game. RBI singles by Andy Farrey
and Stephen Archer started the scoring, and a two-run single by
Nick Manai capped the inning for the Petrels.
The Petrels would only score twice more after that. They got a
run each in the second and thrid innings. An RBI single by J.J.
Rizzo pushed the lead to five. Then, the Petrels scored an unearned
run in the third.
They would not score again, and were forced to hold on as Emory
mounted numerous rallies. Emory left eight men on base in the game,
and the Petrels turned three double plays on them.
With the score 6-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, Emory
recorded an RBI double to make the score 6-5 and put the potential
tying run in scoring position. However, Matthew Cornwell was able
to induce a ground ball to second to end the game and pick up his
second save of the year.
Drew Brooks picked up the win in relief, going two innings
without allowing a hit at a time when Emory had just pulled the
lead back to 6-4 and appeared to be on the war path. He is now 1-3
on the season.
Though Sam Briend did not pitch long enough to qualify for the
win, the regular relief pitcher went four largely effective
innings, allowing four runs on five hits. A day after much of the
bullpen was extensively used in the blowout at the hands of
Piedmont, Briend's four strong innings were just what the doctor
ordered.
The win improves the Petrels to 17-14 on the year. They will now
travel to Centre for this weekend's huge SCAC series. If they take
two-of-three from the Colonels, Oglethorpe will clinch a spot in
the SCAC baseball tournament.
