Petrels Set School Record With 8th Straight Win

Box Score

The men's soccer team topped Rhodes College on Friday evening in Memphis 2-1. The Petrels set a program best 8 straight wins on the strength of two Jakub Madej goals, the second of which broke a 1-1 tie in the 86th minute of the contest.

Playing for the first time as a nationally ranked team, the Petrels found themselves in a hole early on when the Lynx jumped in front with a strike in the 22nd minute. Rhodes was able to make that lead hold into the halftime intermission.

After Oglethorpe only held a 5-4 advantage in shots taken in the first half, the Petrels dialed up the intensity in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts. In all, Oglethorpe would out-shoot the Lynx 12-2 in the second stanza en route to taking control of the game.

The Petrels equalized in the 55th minute when Madej converted a penalty kick. He then kept the game from heading into overtime by scoring the game-winner with less than five minutes to play. Ben Robertson assisted Madej on the goal that helped set Oglethorpe's all-time win streak at 8.

The Petrels, ranked No. 25 in the nation, are now 11-2-0 on the season. They face Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. this Sunday hoping to improve on their 5-0 SCAC record. A win over the Majors would assure Oglethorpe's participation in the 2011 SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament, featuring the league's top 6 teams.
