The Oglethorpe baseball team fell to 0-2 on the season, losing to crosstown-rival Emory, 14-4.
The Petrels fell behind early 6-0, but were able to mount a comeback in the fifth and sixth innings. With one out in the fifth, center fielder Jeff Pope singled and stole second. Then with two outs, Oglethorpe loaded the bases with two walks and a balk. Right fielder Cory Leff then delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to 6-2. A sixth-inning solo homer by catcher Jeff Brothers followed, and the Petrels cut the deficit to 6-3.
However, in the bottom of the sixth Emory put the game out of reach with five runs on three hits, two hit batsmen and a walk, giving them an 11-3 lead and putting them well on their way to victory.
Neal Amos suffered the loss on the day. He allowed six runs on 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings. The Petrels, on the whole, gave up 17 hits in the game.
Brothers went 2-for-3 on the day with the home run, a double and a walk. Spencer Kennedy and TJ Schmutz both pitched scoreless innings in relief for the Petrels, allowing a hit each.
Oglethorpe will continue their weekend home-and-away series with Emory on Sunday. The game will start at 1 p.m. at Anderson Field.
