Box Score 2 After losing a heartbreaking game at the end to Centre Saturday afternoon, the Petrels lost a similar contest in Game 1 of a doubleheader Sunday, but rebounded to take Game 2 and stay above .500 in SCAC play.
In Game 1, the Petrels lost 2-1 in 10 innings (the game was scheduled for seven). The two teams traded runs in the first inning, with Oglethorpe's coming on a bad pickoff attempt. Center fielder Jeff Pope scored the run after doubling to lead off the inning, a hit which was aided by the Centre right fielder slipping on the wet field.
Neither team scored another run until the 10th, when a Centre solo home run gave the Colonels the lead, and eventually the win.
The Petrels were unable to take advantage of an excellent pitching performance by Mark Hoban. The Oglethorpe starter went 7 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on six hits. He did not factor into the decision.
However, the team was able to rebound in Game 2, winning comprehensively, 9-3. Centre again took the early one-run lead in the second, but in the bottom half came the inning the Petrels had been looking for. They broke the game open almost before it began. They sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs on six hits in the inning. Run-scoring plays in the inning included a Ryan Grau sacrifice fly, a Jake Spear RBI single, a Cornwell two-run single and a Brendan Pilger two-run double.
The Petrels then used the big lead to their advantage, and added on to it in the fifth. The big blow was a two-run home run by catcher Joe Parillo, but Pilger drove in another run with a bases-loaded walk.
Briend continued the string of quality pitching performances from Petrel starters of late, allowing two earned runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. He picked up the win to improve to 2-3 on the year.
First baseman Adam Brazenas was a perfect 3-for-3 in Game 2 with a double, a walk, two runs scored, and his first stolen base of the season.
The split moves the Petrels to 13-9 on the year, 3-2 in SCAC play. They will next be in action Tuesday evening at Anderson Field, when they will take on Maryville at 5 p.m.
