For the second straight year the Oglethorpe men's tennis team topped Sewanee in the quarterfinals of the SCAC Tournament to advance to Saturday's semifinal round. This year, the Petrels topped the Tigers 8-1 to set up a rematch of last season's semifinal bout against Trinity University.
Oglethorpe managed to win all three doubles points in close, hard fought matches. The No. 1 combo of Felix Mann-Ross Beall survived 9-8 in a tiebreak and the No. 2 team of Alex Biffle-Rajiv Dinakaran won 8-6. At No. 3, the duo of Ethan Motz-Bryan Bailey claimed another narrow 9-7 win.
The Petrels won 5 of the 6 singles matches to close out the huge win. Bailey clinched the match at No. 4 while Sandy Christoffersen was the only Petrel to go down in defeat. Complete match results are included below.
The win pushes Oglethorpe into the semis and guarantees no worse than a second consecutive fourth place finish in one of the toughest tennis conferences in the country. To advance to the school's first championship match, the Petrels will have to top one of the finest programs in the country in Trinity. Saturday's semifinal match is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Eastern.
