Petrels Get Overtime Victory over No. 21 Maryville

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team picked up a big regional road victory Saturday night, taking out the homestanding Maryville Scots, 3-2, in overtime. The Scots entered the contest as the No. 21 ranked team in the nation.

The game was a tense affair that featured Oglethorpe trying to hold onto a lead for much of the game, followed by a wild finish.

The Petrels got the scoring started in the 29th minute when Jakub Madej finished off a feed from Aaron Walker. The Petrels held this 1-0 lead for the majority of the game. Into the final 10 minutes the game went with Oglethorpe still holding onto their one-goal lead. But Maryville was finally able to equalize in the 82nd minute.

However, the Petrels got the goal back just over a minute later. Carlos Gaston tallied the goal in the 83rd minute, giving the Petrels a 2-1 lead. This lead lasted less than two minutes, though, as Maryville equalized again in the 85th minute.

The game went into sudden-death overtime, and it didn't take long for the Petrels to finish it off. In the 96th minute (the sixth minute of overtime), Walker scored directly off a free kick from just outside the penalty area, giving the Petrels the 3-2 victory.

Walker finished with a goal and an assist, and Madej and Gaston had a goal each.

The win improves the Petrels to 6-2 on the year. They will next be in action this weekend, when they will host Austin and Dallas in the first conference weekend of the season.
