Men's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker to Millsaps, 3-2, in Second Period of Extra Time

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team rallied from a late deficit Sunday to send their game with Millsaps to extra time at Salamone Field, only to see the Majors score on a penalty kick in the 105th minute take the game, 3-2.

The Majors scored in the 84th minute to turn what had been a tense 1-1 affair into a Millsaps lead. The Petrels would not go quietly, however.

In the 89th minute, senior defender Nikos Papanikolopoulos ran into the path of a header that junior forward Carlos Gaston nodded down in the box and slammed it into the back of the net, tying the score at 2-2. Mere moments later, Millsaps had a man sent off for a second yellow card, meaning the Petrels would face a 10-man Majors squad during extra time.

However, in the 105th minute, midway through the second period of extra time and five minutes from a tie game, a Millsaps attacker was pulled down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. The Majors converted the kick, ending the game on the golden goal.

The Petrels had taken a very early 1-0 lead in the first minute of the game. Senior midfielder Justin Graves had run onto a cross from junior midfielder Aleks Tanjga that was deflected by a Millsaps defender in the penalty area and slammed it home for the early advantage.

Millsaps tied the game in the 17th minute, setting up the tense affair that persisted the rest of the game. The Petrels had a penalty shot of their own stopped late in the first half.

The Petrels were outshot 26-14 on the afternoon, 12-6 on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Vaughn Moore did all he could, stopping nine Millsaps shots over the course of the game's 105 minutes. Unfortunately, he could not keep out the final penalty shot, which was perfectly struck.

The loss drops the team to 8-3-2 on the season, 4-1-1 in SAA play. The result sets up a three-way tie for first place in the conference going into the regular season's final game, with Oglethorpe, Berry and Millsaps all holding 4-1-1 conference records. The Petrels will take on Berry Saturday at 3 p.m. on Salamone Field while Millsaps hosts Birmingham-Southern that evening.
