Men's Soccer Advances to SAA Final with Heart-Stopping 3-2 Win Over Berry

Box Score

CONWAY, Ark. - The Oglethorpe men's soccer team earned their second-ever trip to a conference championship game Saturday with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Berry in Conway, Ark. The third-seeded Petrels will take on top-seeded Millsaps in Sunday's championship game at 2 p.m. Eastern time.

With the game tied 2-2, it appeared as though it would take extra time to decide things between these two teams, who tied 0-0 on Salamone Field last weekend. However, with under two minutes remaining in the game, junior forward Eyal Schecter broke down the right side of the field and whipped a pinpoint cross into the box. Senior forward Nick Williamson ran onto the end of it and fired a shot past the Berry goalkeeper for his eighth goal of the season in the 89th minute of the contest.

The Petrels were then able to hold on in the final minute, as Berry furiously threw numbers forward. Oglethorpe freshman goalkeeper Vaughn Moore punched a corner kick out of the box, then came off his line to snatch a cross as time was winding down to secure the 3-2 victory.

After a scoreless first half, the Petrels came out like a house afire to start the second half. Junior forward Carlos Gaston started the half by firing a shot off a Berry defender and into the back of the net in the 50th minute, giving the Petrels their much sought-after 1-0 lead and Gaston his fifth goal of the season.

Then in the 51st minute, less than a minute later, senior midfielder Sean King rebounded his own shot off a save by the Berry goalkeeper and fired the follow-up shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the season and a 2-0 Oglethorpe lead.

However, Berry came back to tie the game during a five-minute stretch midway through the second half. The first goal came in the 67th minute, and the game-tying goal came in the 72nd, setting up the frantic finish.

The Petrels outshot the Vikings 14-8 overall, including 8-4 in shots on goal. The Petrels also took five corner kicks to Berry's three. The foul count was even at 14-14, though Berry picked up two yellow cards and a red to the Petrels' one yellow card. The Berry red card came in the 89th minute, just after the Oglethorpe goal.

The 10-3-3 Petrels will now face off against the 12-5-2 Millsaps Majors for the SAA title. The two teams met at Salamone Field on Oct. 27, with Millsaps winning, 3-2, on a penalty kick in the second period of extra time after Oglethorpe had tied the game in the 89th minute.

It will be Oglethorpe's second appearance in a conference tournament final, the first coming during the 2011 SCAC Championship. The Petrels defeated Centre, 1-0, in that game to earn their first-ever conference championship.
