The Oglethorpe women's tennis team traveled across town to Decatur, Ga., to take on Agnes Scott in their first road match of the year, and came away 7-2 losers Friday afternoon.

The Lady Petrels found themselves swept in the doubles portion of the dual match 8-1, 8-2 and 8-4. That put them behind 3-0, needing to win five of six singles matches to win the dual match.

Things got even worse for Oglethorpe when freshman Marcail McGranahan dropped her singles match in the No. 2 slot, putting her team behind 4-0. 

However, the Lady Petrels would mount a bit of a comeback, though. Junior Kate Siess won her No. 5 match 6-2, 6-3, keeping the Lady Petrels alive. Then, freshman Charlsie Johnson followed with a victory in her No. 6 match, 6-3, 6-2. These two victories drew the squad to within 4-2. 

However, freshman Katherine Walker lost the No. 1 singles match in straight sets, clinching the dual match victory for the home-standing Scotties, 5-2. 

The Lady Petrels showed well in the other matches, with freshman MaryAnne Hafen serving for the second set in a match she eventually lost 6-1, 7-5. Then, freshman Tricia Groover won the second set of her match 7-5 after losing the first set 6-0. Because the dual match had already been decided, the match went to a decisive tiebreak. At 8-8 in the tiebreak, Groover's opponent won finished the match off 10-8 with two excellent shots.

The loss drops the team to 1-1 on the season. They will next take the court a week from today, when they welcome Huntingdon onto the Downing Howell Courts at 2 p.m.
