Box Score 2 The Oglethorpe baseball team was swept in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon by Millsaps, losing the first game 10-0 in seven innings and losing the second 3-2. The two games completed a three-game series sweep for Millsaps.
In Game 2, neither team could get anything going against the opposing pitcher for the first four innings of the scheduled seven-inning game. Then in the fifth, the Petrels finally broke through with a pair of runs. Catcher Hunter Riley led off the inning with a triple, and third baseman Frank Sarno followed by slapping a ball down the left-field line for an RBI single that gave the Stormy Petrels a 1-0 lead. Then, shortstop Spencer Transue reached on an error and the runners moved up to second and third with nobody out. Second baseman Keith Dearden walked to load the bases with one out, and designated hitter Jeff Brothers hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate the inning's second run and give the Petrels a 2-0 lead.
However, the home-standing Majors finally broke through on Petrel starter Emmett Goodman in the bottom half of the inning and scored three runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead with only two innings remaining.
Oglethorpe put the potential tying run on second base in the seventh in the form of right fielder Nick Manai, but could not bring him home.
Goodman had a good outing, but suffered the loss due to the three-run fifth inning. He allowed the three runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out eight.
Riley went 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, while Manai had another solid game, going 2-for-4 with a double. Brothers and Sarno each went 1-for-2. Sarno drove in a run and scored a run, while Brothers drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
In Game 1, the Petrels fell subject to the seven-inning mercy rule for the second consecutive game. They managed six hits in the game, but never got a man farther than second base.
The game was scoreless through 3 1/2 innings, but Millsaps broke through with a run in the fourth off of Oglethorpe starter Kyle Mitchell, then added three more in the fifth. Mitchell suffered the loss, having allowed three earned runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked just one and struck out three.
In the seventh, the Majors scored six runs off Petrel reliever Joseph Marco, four of them earned, to put themselves up 10-0 and enact the 10-run rule.
First baseman Casey Tuttle went 2-for-3 in the game, while Transue posted a 2-for-4.
The losses drop the Petrels to 5-18 on the season, 2-10 in SAA competition. They remain in seventh place in the league, two games back of Centre for sixth and a game-and-a-half ahead of Sewanee for last. They will next take the field on Tuesday, when they travel up to Demorest, Ga., to take on in-state rival Piedmont at 7 p.m. They then welcome Centre in for a three-game SAA series next weekend.
