The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell in a close game to Transylvania Saturday afternoon, losing 11-10.

The Lady Petrels never led in the game, but were close throughout. They fell behind by a goal and immediately tied the game three times in the first half, with a goal from Sydney Sparks and two from Michelle Vasques. The game was tied 3-3 with 10 minutes left in the first half. 

However, the visiting Pioneers scored three straight goals from that point to take a 6-3 lead with 5:43 left in the half. Sparks scored a man-down goal and Vasques netted her third of the game to draw the Lady Petrels to within two goals, 7-5. 

Oglethorpe drew within a goal early in the second half, Vasques scoring her fourth goal of the game less than a minute into the half. After Transylvania went back ahead by two, the Lady Petrels drew to within one again on Sparks' third goal of the contest. 

Seconds later, the Pioneers scored again to retake the two-goal lead, 9-7. Oglethorpe fought right back from two-goal deficits twice more, with additional goals from Sparks and Vasques, and Oglethorpe found themselves down 10-9 with 4:22 remaining. Then, with 1:50 left, the Lady Petrels finally broke through and tied the game. Senior Katie Weeks slotted a shot past the Transylvania goalie to even the score at 10-10.

However, less than a minute later, the Pioneers went back ahead with 1:10 remaining. This time, Transylvania held onto the lead and came away with the victory.

Vasques finished with five goals on six shots, while Sparks had four goals on nine shots and four ground balls.  Goalie Hayley Flanagan stopped 12 Transylvania shots. 

The 1-4 Lady Petrels are next in action Monday evening, when they take on Huntingdon at 6:30 p.m. on the new Oglethorpe Track and Field.
