Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team mounted a big comeback in the eighth inning after falling behind 5-0 early in the game Tuesday afternoon at Emory, but went on to lose in extra innings, 6-5.
After falling behind 5-0 in the first three innings, the Petrels came storming back in the eighth inning. Shortstop Spencer Transue and right fielder Nick Manai started the inning with back-to-back walks, and catcher Jeff Brothers continued the run with an RBI single to make the score 5-1. Manai then also scored on a fielder's choice from second baseman Keith Dearden on which the home-standing Eagles got no outs. The Petrels had runners at first and second and nobody out with the score standing at 5-2 in favor of Emory.
First baseman Cory Leff singled up the middle as the next batter, loading the bases. Then, pinch hitter Hunter Riley was hit by a pitch, driving in another run and drawing the Petrels to within two. The next batter, third baseman Frank Sarno, hit a sacrifice fly, which provided Emory with its first out of the inning, but also scored another run for the Petrels and made it 5-4. The batter after that, left fielder Jake Purcell, tied the game with what looked to be an RBI groundout, but Emory committed another error on the play and again got no outs.
When the inning was over, the Petrels had scored five runs on two hits and two Emory errors. They could've had more, but hit into a double play with the bases loaded and still only one out two batters later.
Emory was able to stop the bleeding from the five-run eighth, right the ship, and win the game with a run in the 10th inning.
Joseph Marco suffered the loss for the Petrels, his second of the year. He pitched an inning-and-a-third, including the decisive 10th. He allowed the game-winning run on three hits and a walk, striking out one Eagles batter.
Starter Joey McAlpin found himself let off the hook by Oglethorpe's five-run eighth. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits over three innings, walking one and striking out one.
Strangely enough, even though the Petrels put together a five-run inning, they were largely shut down by Emory pitching. They managed only four hits in 10 innings, and only two Petrels recorded a hit on the day. Leff and Brothers both went 2-for-4. Brothers had a walk, an RBI and a run scored, while Leff recorded a double, the Petrels' only extra-base hit of the afternoon.
The loss drops the Petrels to 12-23 on the season, and means that the Petrels suffer a season sweep at the hands of their crosstown rivals. Oglethorpe ends their conference season this weekend with a three-game SAA series against Hendrix on Anderson Field. The Petrels currently sit in sixth place in the conference, and would move up to fifth if they sweep Hendrix.
