Women's Tennis Falls to Rhodes, 9-0, in SAA Quarterfinals

The seventh-seeded Oglethorpe women's tennis team never could get untracked Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the SAA Championships against second-seeded Rhodes. They lost 9-0 to the Lynx at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Katherine Walker and Mary Ann Hafen kept the No. 1 doubles match close early, but the Rhodes team pulled away in the end, winning 8-3. The other two doubles matches ended 8-1 and 8-2, a disappointing result that led to a 3-0 deficit going into singles.

Singles didn't go much better for the Lady Petrels, as only one of the 12 sets played ended closer than 6-1. Charlsie Johnson lost 6-0, 6-4 at No. 6.

The loss eliminates the Lady Petrels from championship contention and drops them to 3-16 on the season, but the squad will continue to play in the tournament's back draw, and will fight for a finish as high as fifth. They will take on sixth-seeded Centre on Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern time to try to get into the fifth-place dual match on Sunday. The Lady Colonels lost to third-seeded Berry on Friday afternoon.
