Box Score 2 The Oglethorpe baseball team entered the day knowing that they would need two wins in Jackson, Miss., to stay alive in the SAA Tournament, as they were knocked to the elimination round on Friday. They defeated Sewanee, 10-0 in seven innings, in their first game of the day, but lost to Millsaps, 13-3 in seven innings, in their second, and found themselves eliminated from the SAA Tournament.
In the first game, the two teams were scoreless through the first four innings, as Petrel starter Emmett Goodman was shutting the Tigers hitters down. In the bottom of the fifth, Oglethorpe finally broke through with a single run to take the lead. First baseman Casey Tuttle led off the inning with a double, and was moved to third by third baseman Frank Sarno. Left fielder Will Hanna followed with a sacrifice fly, and the Petrels had manufactured a 1-0 lead.
They added another in the sixth, when second baseman Keith Dearden singled up the middle with two outs and stole second. Designated hitter Cory Leff then came through with a double down the left-field line, scoring Dearden and doubling the Oglethorpe advantage to 2-0.
However, in the seventh, what had been a tense, tight elimination battle was blown wide open. The Petrels scored eight runs on five hits and invoked the 10-run rule on the Tigers before the inning was over. Tuttle led off the frame with a double, then Sarno walked and Hanna got aboard with a bunt single, loading the bases with nobody out. Center fielder Vernon Trice then started a parade of RBI hits with a single to left field, scoring Tuttle. Right fielder Nick Manai drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0, then all the runners moved up a base on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Catcher Jeff Brothers walked and Dearden delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to make the score 7-0. Leff walked and shortstop Spencer Transue reached on a fielder's choice-RBI, but Sewanee failed to get an out on the play after committing an error. Another Petrel run scored on the error, and Oglethorpe had a 9-0 lead with nobody out in the inning. Tuttle ended the game as the 10th batter of the inning, lacing a double down the left-field line and finishing the game at 10-0.
Goodman picked up the win, and delivered another four-hit shutout, walking just one and striking out nine over the game's seven innings.
Dearden had a huge game at the plate for the Petrels, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Tuttle also stood out for the squad, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.
In the second game, the Petrels took on No. 1 seed and host Millsaps in another elimination game, after they were upset by No. 4 seed Hendrix earlier in the day. Millsaps took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first (the Majors were the road team in this game), but Oglethorpe answered quickly in the bottom half. Trice tripled into the left-center field gap, and Manai followed with an RBI groundout to tie the game.
However, Millsaps took the lead back with a single run in the second, then extended it with three more in the fourth. With a 5-1 deficit, Oglethorpe needed to start working their way back into the game, and they did just that with two runs in the fifth. Sarno was hit by a pitch to lead the inning off, and Trice followed with a one-out infield single. Then, Manai and Brothers came through with back-to-back RBI singles, pulling the Petrels right back into the game at 5-3.
However, that was the last run Oglethorpe would score, and Millsaps would score one in the sixth, and end the game with seven in the seventh, invoking the 10-run rule and ending the Petrels' season.
Sam Franklin suffered the loss for the Petrels, allowing two earned runs (five total) on five hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings.
Brothers went 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI, Trice went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, and Sarno went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.
The results mean the Petrels end their season with a 15-28 record.
