Women's Lacrosse Grabs First Road Win in Program History, Defeats Agnes Scott, 16-10

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team picked up its first road victory in program history Wednesday evening, beating Agnes Scott across town in Decatur, Ga., 16-10.

The Lady Petrels got four goals each from senior Katie Weeks, junior Carissa Thomas and freshman Michelle Vasques to help them to the big win. Thomas tallied her four goals on just four shots, while Weeks picked hers up on six shots. Vasques put nine shots on goal in the game.

Oglethorpe took a 2-0 lead over the first four minutes on goals from Weeks and Thomas, but then watched Agnes Scott score six straight goals and take a 6-2 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.

However, Oglethorpe then went on a 5-0 run of their own, getting goals from senior Sarah Giles and freshman Sydney Sparks, as well as Thomas and Vasques. When Vasques scored with 2:54 left in the half, the Lady Petrels all of a sudden had a 7-6 lead. The home-standing Scotties got one back right before the half to send the game to the break knotted, 7-7.

In the second half, the Lady Petrels picked up where they left off in the first. They took the lead for good, 9-8, when Weeks netted a goal with 21:23 left, and from there, they scored a couple more, including one from freshman Tate Davis, and took an 11-8 lead with 16:04 remaining.

Agnes Scott would score twice more, but the Lady Petrels would score five more times and run away with the game, in the end. Oglethorpe outscored Agnes Scott 9-3 in the second half.

In addition to the four-goal scorers, the Lady Petrels got single goals from Davis, Sparks, Giles, and freshman Xenia Perry. Sparks passed out an assist, as well, and secured six draw controls. Freshman goalie Hayley Flanagan stopped 13 shots on the evening.

Agnes Scott actually outshot the Lady Petrels 29-27, but turned the ball over 22 times to Oglethorpe's 13.

The win improves Oglethorpe to 2-8 on the season. They return home Saturday to take on SAA opponent Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m. Senior Day festivities will be held before the game.
