Men's Tennis Continues Winning Ways, Defeats Birmingham-Southern, 5-2

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team came back from being down 2-1 after doubles Sunday morning to defeat Birmingham-Southern, 5-2, on the Downing Howell Courts.

The Petrels' only doubles victory came on the racquets of Bryan Bailey and C.J. Antonio, as the pair defeated their No. 2 doubles opponents, 8-4. However, the Panthers took down the other two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles and threatened to pull off the upset.

However, Oglethorpe steamrolled the Panthers in singles. Briton Richardson tied the dual match 2-2 after winning his No. 6 match 6-1, 6-2. Bryan Bailey followed at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory to give the Petrels the 3-2 lead. At No. 5, Ben Hirsch brought Oglethorpe to within a match of clinching the day, defeating his opponent 6-2, 7-6(0). C.J. Antonio clinched moments later at No. 2, culminating a five-match win streak for the Petrels after going down 2-0 in doubles. Antonio won the clinching match 6-3, 6-4.

The other two matches were left unfinished by coaches' decision so that the women's matches could get underway, but Ethan Motz was leading 3-2 in the third set at No. 1 and Kirk Zhao was preparing to begin a third set in his No. 4 match.

The win improves the Petrels to 14-4 on the season, 4-1 in SAA play. They will next take the court on Wednesday afternoon, when they host Piedmont in a non-conference dual match at 3:30 p.m.
