Women's Tennis Loses to Regionally Ranked Birmingham-Southern, 8-1

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team gave their best shot against Birmingham-Southern, who is currently ranked 15th in the Atlantic South region, but wound up losing at home to the Lady Panthers, 8-1.

The Lady Petrels found themselves swept in the doubles matches, putting them behind 3-0. Birmingham-Southern proceeded to take five of the six singles matches, including the first two that they needed to secure victory, cruising home for the easy 8-1 win.

The lone victory on the day came from Tricia Groover out of the No. 4 slot. She lost the first set 6-3, but came back to take a tough second set 7-5. As the dual match was already decided, the third set was played in the form of a super tiebreak, and Groover crushed her opponent 10-3 in that to secure the win at No. 4.

At No. 5, Kate Siess lost the first set 6-2, but also came back with a 7-5 win in the second set to force a super tiebreak. Unfortunately, Siess fell after a tough fight in the tiebreak, 10-8.

Katherine Walker was close in the first set of her No. 1 match, falling 7-5. However, her opponent stormed her 6-1 in the second to secure the victory.

The loss drops the Lady Petrels to 2-13 on the year, 0-5 in conference play. They will celebrate Senior Day, honoring the career of senior Clara Reinheimer, on Wednesday afternoon against Piedmont. The match gets started at 3:30 p.m.
