Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team found itself down 2-1 in the second half at home to Maryville Sunday afternoon on Salamone Field. They found a way to come back and hang on for a 2-2 draw against the visiting Scots.
The game started poorly for the Petrels, as they watched the Scots take a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. They rebounded from the quick deficit, however, and picked up an equalizer in the 25th minute when junior forward Carlos Gaston directed a feed from junior midfielder Ellis Curry into the back of the net.
The equal footing did not last long, however. The visiting Scots took their lead right back four minutes later, and held on with a 2-1 lead going into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Petrels spent the first 20 minutes or so desperately searching for another equalizer. They found it in the 68th minute when freshman forward Nick Pelerose slotted home a pass from freshman midfielder Gustavo Martinez off a quick restart.
With the score 2-2, both teams set out in search of the game-winning goal. Neither team was able to find it over 40 more minutes of play.
It was a chippy game toward the end, as the two teams combined for six yellow cards over the course of the second half and overtime, and for 34 fouls during this same period. The final booking saw a Maryville player sent off for his second yellow card of the game, but it occurred in the 109th minute, giving the Petrels almost no time to take advantage of the extra man.
Pelerose's goal was the first of his collegiate career, while Gaston's was his second of the season. Additionally, both Curry and Martinez notched their second assists of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Vaughn Moore continued his nice start to the season, stopping five Maryville shots on goal.
The Petrels outshot the Scots by a 17-14 tally, including 9-8 in shots on goal. Oglethorpe enjoyed 10 corner kicks over the course of the contest, as opposed to six for their opponents.
The 2-2-1 Petrels will next be in action Tuesday night, when they take on Piedmont on the road in Demorest, Ga. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
