Men's Soccer Sails to 3-1 Victory Over Covenant in Deluge

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team scored the first three goals against in-state opponent Covenant late Wednesday afternoon, then held on for a 3-1 victory in a downpour at the new Oglethorpe Track and Field. The game was moved from Salamone Field, the Petrels' normal home field, because of wet and muddy grounds.

The first half was all Petrels, and they got started early. Sophomore midfielder Nick Muntean took a perfect cross to the back post from junior midfielder Ellis Curry and headed it past the Covenant goalkeeper in the eighth minute for a 1-0 Oglethorpe lead.

The Petrels continued to fire shot after shot at the Covenant goal, outshooting the visiting Scots 15-5 in the first half, including 6-3 on goal.

Oglethorpe was rewarded for its work late in the first half, doubling their lead to 2-0. Senior forward Nick Williamson bagged his fifth goal of the season on a cross from junior midfielder Aleks Tanjga in the 37th minute that was almost identical to the build-up on the first goal. The tally gave the Petrels a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Petrels extended the lead to 3-0 very early in the second half when Tanjga turned a Muntean corner kick into the goal in the 48th minute. From there, Covenant started to string some possession together, and did score a goal in the 53rd minute, putting them on the verge of getting back into the game. However, the Petrels successfully killed the game off late and secured the 3-1 victory.

Both Tanjga and Muntean recorded four points for the game with a goal and an assist. Tanjga's goal was his first of the year, while Muntean tallied his third. The Petrels wound up outshooting the Scots 21-15, 9-6 on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Vaughn Moore had perhaps the best game of his young career, stopping five Covenant shots on the afternoon.

The 4-2-1 Petrels will next take the field next Saturday, October 5, when they start SAA play at Sewanee at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
