Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team earned its first victory of the season Sunday afternoon, blowing out Averett, 6-0, in Danville, Va.
The Petrels came out on fire from the opening whistle, tallying a goal in the first minute-and-a-half of the game. Senior defender Joe Buschini bagged his first goal of the season in the second minute of the game, getting the Stormy Petrels off and running to a 1-0 lead.
They added to their lead in the 22nd minute when freshman midfielder Gustavo Martinez scored the first goal of his college career on a shot from the top of the penalty area. Buschini provided the assist, giving him his third point of the game.
Barely 10 minutes later, senior forward Nick Williamson extended the Petrel lead to 3-0 off an assist from sophomore midfielder Nick Muntean. The 33rd minute tally was the Williamson's first of the season.
Just for good measure, Oglethorpe made it 4-0 in the 37th minute when senior defender Nikos Papanikolopoulos headed home his second goal of the season off a cross from junior midfielder Ellis Curry. The team would maintain that lead into the halftime break.
All in all, the Petrels put seven of their 12 first-half shots on target. They also were awarded four corner kicks and only committed three fouls.
In the second half, the Petrels continued adding to their lead. Junior forward Carlos Gaston finished a cross from Muntean in the 50th minute to give Oglethorpe a 5-0 lead. The Petrels closed their scoring in the 55th minute when Williamson bagged his second goal of the game off of Muntean's third assist.
The Petrels outshot Averett 17-7 total, 9-4 on goal. Williamson finished the game with four points, having scored two goals. Buschini (a goal and an assist) and Muntean (three assists) recorded three points each.
The win improves the Petrels to 1-2 on the season. They will next be in action Thursday afternoon, when they will host crosstown rival Emory in their home opener at 4 p.m.
